1. Overview
This Written Program of Veterinary Care (PVC) outlines the medical, preventive, emergency, and routine husbandry protocols for all dogs owned, housed, or under contract with Stokeshire Designer Doodles, including dogs living in guardian homes.
It is designed to align with:
- USDA / APHIS Animal Welfare Act veterinary care requirements
- Wisconsin ATCP 16 dog seller & dog facility operator standards
- Purdue Canine Care Certified™ (CCC) Five Pillars of Care
Dr. Matt Moodie serves as the attending veterinarian and provides oversight, annual examinations, and consultation for all matters affecting canine health and welfare at Stokeshire Designer Doodles.
2. Preventive Care Protocols
2.1 Adult Vaccination Schedule
All vaccinations are recorded with date, manufacturer, lot number, and provider in the individual dog’s medical file.

Optional vaccines (e.g., Lyme, Influenza) may be administered based on risk assessment by the attending veterinarian. Any deviation from this protocol requires veterinary approval.
2.2 Puppy Vaccination Schedule
Puppies are examined by a licensed veterinarian and vaccinated according to age and health status. Health Certificates / Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) are completed as required prior to sale or interstate transport.

2.3 Parasite Prevention
External Parasites:
- Use of veterinarian-recommended flea and tick preventives (e.g., Bravecto or comparable products) on appropriate schedules.
- Product choice and dosing based on weight, age, and individual health status.
Internal Parasites:
- Puppies dewormed on a recurring schedule (e.g., every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age) using products such as pyrantel pamoate or fenbendazole as directed.
- Adult dogs maintained on a monthly heartworm preventive with intestinal parasite coverage as recommended by the veterinarian.
- Fecal examinations performed at least annually for adults and at least once for each litter prior to placement, or more frequently if indicated.
2.4 Nutrition & Body Condition
Dogs receive a complete and balanced diet meeting AAFCO standards. Pregnant and lactating dams receive adjusted nutrition according to veterinary guidance. Body weight and body condition score (BCS) are assessed at wellness exams and as needed to ensure healthy growth and ideal condition.
2.5 Grooming & Dental Care
- Regular brushing and coat care appropriate to breed mix to prevent matting and skin issues.
- Nail trims approximately every 2–4 weeks.
- Ear checks and cleaning as needed to prevent infection.
- Dental care through chews, brushing where tolerated, and professional cleanings based on veterinary assessment.
3. Veterinary Examinations
3.1 Adult Annual Exams
All adult dogs receive a comprehensive physical examination by the attending veterinarian at least once every 12 months, including assessment of:
- Overall physical health, weight, and body condition score
- Cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, integumentary, and neurologic status
- Oral health and dental needs
- Behavioral/temperament observations relevant to welfare and breeding decisions
3.2 Breeding Dogs
Breeding dogs may receive additional examinations and testing, including but not limited to:
- Pre-breeding exam and reproductive evaluation
- Pregnancy monitoring via palpation, ultrasound, or radiographs as indicated
- Post-whelping exam of dams and neonates to identify and address any complications
3.3 Puppies
Each litter is examined by a veterinarian prior to placement. Examinations document:
- General physical health and weight
- Cardiac auscultation (for murmurs or abnormalities)
- Umbilical hernias, open fontanelles, cleft palates, or other congenital concerns
- Orthopedic or developmental abnormalities when detectable
Health certificates / CVIs are issued as required by Wisconsin law and destination state regulations.
4. Medical Treatment Protocols
4.1 Illness & Injury
Any dog or puppy showing signs of illness or injury (e.g., lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, lameness, difficulty breathing, abnormal behavior, or sudden change in appetite) is reported promptly to the breeder and, when indicated, to the attending veterinarian. The veterinarian directs diagnostics and treatment.
All medical treatments are documented, including date, diagnosis (if known), medications prescribed, dosage, route, frequency, and duration.
4.2 Emergency Care
Emergency conditions (e.g., suspected bloat, seizures, dystocia, traumatic injury, severe respiratory distress, or rapidly deteriorating condition) trigger immediate veterinary contact and, when necessary, emergency transport to a veterinary clinic following the facility’s Emergency Plan and Transport Policy.
4.3 Medication Administration
Prescription medications are administered only under veterinary direction. Records include:
- Dog’s name and ID
- Drug name, strength, and dosage
- Route (oral, topical, injectable, etc.)
- Frequency and duration
- Prescribing veterinarian
- Person administering the medication
5. Reproduction & Whelping
5.1 Pre-Breeding Requirements
- Dogs must be in good general health as determined by the attending veterinarian.
- Age, body condition, temperament, and reproductive history are considered before breeding.
- Genetic and orthopedic screenings are completed and reviewed for breeding decisions.
5.2 Whelping Management
Whelping occurs in a temperature-controlled indoor environment in a clean, safe whelping area. Dams and puppies are monitored closely during labor and postpartum.
- Environmental temperature and drafts controlled based on neonatal needs.
- Puppy weights recorded daily during early life to track growth and identify concerns.
- Complications during whelping or postpartum are promptly reported to the veterinarian.
6. Housing & Husbandry
Housing and daily husbandry practices are designed to meet or exceed Wisconsin ATCP 16 and USDA/APHIS standards and are further guided by CCC welfare expectations.
6.1 Daily Observation
Each dog is visually observed at least once daily to assess appetite, water intake, behavior, posture and gait, coat condition, and elimination. Concerns are recorded and brought to the breeder’s and, when appropriate, the veterinarian’s attention.
6.2 Cleaning & Sanitation
- Primary enclosures cleaned daily to remove waste and keep animals clean and dry.
- Food and water bowls cleaned daily and sanitized at least weekly.
- Disinfection performed using veterinarian-approved products following manufacturer directions.
6.3 Environmental Conditions
- Ventilation maintains reasonable air quality and temperature within safe ranges for dogs.
- Lighting is adequate for care and observation and supports normal day–night cycles.
- Space in enclosures is sufficient for dogs to stand, turn around, lie down comfortably, and move normally.
7. Recordkeeping
Stokeshire Designer Doodles maintains individual records for each dog as required by Wisconsin ATCP 16 and USDA, including:
- Identity (name, breed, sex, date of birth, microchip or other ID)
- Acquisition and disposition information
- Vaccination, deworming, and preventive care history
- Medical exams, diagnoses, treatments, and surgeries
- Reproductive history and litter records for breeding animals
Records are stored in written and/or electronic form, backed up regularly, and retained for at least the minimum legal retention period or longer when relevant to breeding and health decisions.
8. Emergency & Contingency Plan (Summary)
A separate Emergency & Contingency Plan details procedures for fire, severe weather, flooding, extended power outages, and disease outbreaks. This includes evacuation plans, emergency contact information, and care instructions for all dogs during such events.
Personnel are trained on the Emergency & Contingency Plan and their roles within it, and training is documented and reviewed at least annually.
9. Approval & Signatures
By signing below, the attending veterinarian and breeder acknowledge that this Written Program of Veterinary Care reflects the current veterinary guidance for Stokeshire Designer Doodles and will be reviewed and updated at least annually or as conditions, regulations, or best practices change.
