Every Stokeshire

with intention.
James came to believe that every child deserves a dog who understands them. Every family deserves a companion who brings harmony. Every school or therapeutic setting deserves the gentle presence of an animal who can change the emotional temperature of a room.
For James, dogs were more than companions. They were his way of feeling understood. As a neurodivergent child with a vivid mind and a sensitive heart, he often felt out of sync with the world around him. But with animals, he found peace, confidence, and connection.
Caring for the dogs and horses on his family's farm became a refuge and a source of purpose, offering the steady emotional grounding he struggled to find elsewhere. That early bond shaped his calling.
James began to see that what had transformed his own life could transform others, too. Those early experiences formed the heartbeat of Stokeshire, a mission rooted in empathy, built on intention, and organized into four pillars that every puppy moves through in order.
Which two dogs, and why. Breed-appropriate health screening, genetic testing through Embark, and coefficient of inbreeding (COI) review are complete before a pairing is planned. Strategic Genetic Stewardship™, described below, is the mechanism inside this pillar.

The Stokeshire curriculum is not a checklist. It is a developmental arc. Each week builds on the last, supporting a puppy's development, coordination, and relational capacity before go-home day. The work begins at birth. The aim is a dog who arrives prepared.

Across these weeks, our attention is less on how boldly a puppy reacts to something new and more on how it recovers afterward. A confident dog tends to notice what has changed, evaluate it, and return to a settled, engaged state. We record these patterns for each puppy through the Developmental Confidence Circuit™ and the Canine Recovery Index™, an internal observation protocol tracked from about week four through week eight. A structured aptitude evaluation in weeks 7 to 8 remains part of this picture as one input, considered alongside daily observation, trainer notes, health information, and the needs of each family, rather than treated as a verdict on its own. The Stokeshire Method defines a development standard of 135+ hours of intentional socialization and structured work by 12 weeks of age for a four-week Doodle School graduate: 50+ hours from birth through eight weeks, followed by 85+ hours of training, purposeful play, and skill-building. These figures describe the program standard we build to, and per-puppy hours are being logged as this record moves into our client platform.

Strategic Genetic Stewardship™ goes beyond checklists or minimum standards. It allows us to design dogs with intention, not chance, restoring diversity where it has been lost and protecting it where it exists. This is how we breed for decades, not just delivery day.
Genetic COI
Coefficient of InbreedingWe monitor both pedigree and genetic coefficient of inbreeding (COI) and track it across generations, not just litters. Crossing distinct lines can increase genetic diversity and may reduce the likelihood that some recessive inherited conditions are expressed. It does not eliminate genetic disease or the health considerations present in the parent breeds, which is why every breeding dog is screened before a pairing is planned.
DLA Haplotypes
Immune System GeneticsWe review immune-system genetics, including DLA-DRB1, DQA1, and DQB1 markers, and favor pairings that preserve haplotype diversity. Diversity at these markers is thought to support resilient immune development across the population. A healthy immune system is an invisible inheritance.
Multi-Generation Compatibility
Evaluated across generations, not littersBreeding decisions are evaluated across generations. Pairings are selected to balance structure, temperament, and genetic diversity over time. We are thinking about the dogs we will produce in five years, not just the litter due next month.

What is the Stokeshire Method?
The Stokeshire Method™ is a four-pillar development framework used by Stokeshire Designer Doodles in Medford, Wisconsin: Genetics, The First Fifty-Six Days, The Match, and Doodle School. Each pairing is planned using health screening, Embark genetic testing, COI analysis, and DLA haplotype review; each litter is raised through an eight-week structured curriculum; each puppy is evaluated with the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test and matched to a family at Match Day based on measured temperament and lifestyle fit; and families who choose it continue into four weeks of Doodle School™, which has run continuously since December 2020. The goal is a calm, confident companion prepared for family life, therapy work, or emotional support roles.
How many hours of socialization does a Stokeshire puppy receive?
The Stokeshire Method program standard is 50+ hours of early socialization per puppy from birth through eight weeks. Puppies enrolled in the four-week Doodle School program are scheduled for 85+ additional hours of structured training, purposeful play, and skill-building, bringing the combined standard to 135+ hours by 12 weeks of age, alongside 300+ active-care hours of scheduled care, supervision, and household participation during their stay. These figures describe scheduled program time and generally vary by litter size, season, and individual puppy needs. Per-puppy hours are being logged as this record moves into our client platform.
How are Stokeshire puppies temperament tested?
Every Stokeshire puppy is evaluated with the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test in the recommended window of days 49 to 56 (weeks 7 to 8); the exact day is recorded for each puppy. The evaluation scores ten exercises: social attraction, following, restraint, social dominance, elevation, retrieving, touch sensitivity, sound sensitivity, sight sensitivity, and stability. Two further traits, energy level and dog friendliness, are recorded from observation across the eight weeks, giving twelve reported traits. Scores inform how each puppy is matched to a family, so placement decisions are based on measured temperament rather than intuition alone. When did Stokeshire Doodle School start?
Stokeshire Doodle School™ launched in December 2020 and has run continuously since. The program page went live that month, the first families enrolled in early 2021, and the first client cohort entered a trainer's home in May 2021. The Stokeshire Method™ is how the same program is now taught to other breeders.
Is Stokeshire a licensed dog breeder?
Yes. Stokeshire Designer Doodles holds Wisconsin DATCP license 514401-DS and is inspected by the state. Every placement includes a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection signed by our attending veterinarian, and no puppy is transferred before 7 weeks of age. Our license, written Program of Veterinary Care, and Emergency and Contingency Plan are publicly available for review.

Regular inspection with full compliance. No transfers before 7 weeks of age. Every inspection record is available to the public.
Every sale or adoption includes a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) signed within 10 days of exam and valid for 30 days. Records retained 5 or more years.
Our facility maintains a documented Emergency and Contingency Plan covering fire, severe weather, disease outbreak, and transport emergencies, in line with USDA and APHIS protocols.
