Training Tips for Darwin

Structure + calm leadership + positive reinforcement = a confident companion.

🧺 Crate Training

Darwin is adjusting well to his crate routine and learning it’s a calm, safe place to rest. Puppies may occasionally regress, especially during transitions. If he fusses at night, it often means he needs a quick potty break.

  • Keep a predictable rhythm: potty → play/mental work → unwind → crate.
  • Make it inviting: soft bedding, safe chews, feed meals in the crate.
  • Cover with a light blanket to reduce visual distractions and encourage rest.
  • Always take Darwin out to potty immediately after crate time and right before going back in.
Praise and small treats when he enters willingly build strong, positive associations.

🚪 Potty Training

Structure, patience, and routine are key. Go outside frequently—every 30–45 minutes when awake/active and always after eating, drinking, playing, or waking up.

  • Use a consistent cue: “Go potty.”
  • Keep to easy-clean areas; roll up rugs during the early phase.
  • Never unsupervised: use a leash, gated space, or keep him anchored nearby.
Most puppies aren’t reliably house-trained until around 6–7 months. Diligent supervision and consistency are essential.

🍽️ Feeding & Water Schedule

Three-meal structure supports growth and reliable potty habits. Offer water with meals only for now to help create predictable elimination.

~ 8:00 a.m. · Morning Feeding
Potty → breakfast + water → outside again within 30–45 minutes.
~ 11:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. · Midday Training Sessions
Replace lunch with two short sessions. Use a total of ½ cup kibble (pre-measured) as rewards across both sessions.
~ 4:30 p.m. · Evening Feeding
Final meal + water. Multiple potty opportunities before bed to fully eliminate.
After the evening meal, remove water unless he has a walk or significant exercise. If so, allow a brief drink followed by a final potty break. As Darwin matures, gradually reintroduce free-access water during the day.

🐾 Puppy Manners

Darwin is affectionate and social—keep him leashed on outings; he’ll want to greet everyone. Daily, gentle exposure (car rides, stores, parks) builds confidence.

  • Chewing: “No, Darwin” → offer an appropriate toy → praise when he chooses it.
  • Jumping: turn away, wait for a sit, reward calm greetings.

🦮 Leash Training

He’s comfortable on a slip lead and enjoys exploring. Keep walks short and positive—about 20–30 minutes morning and evening.

  • Use cheerful markers: “Come, Darwin—good boy!”
  • Reward frequently for staying near you; celebrate loose-leash moments.
Walks = exercise + real-world training that strengthens the handler bond.

🎯 Cue Training

Introducing: come, sit, down, stay, quiet, and no. Build name focus by holding a treat near your face, say “Darwin,” reward eye contact.

Come Sit Down Stay Quiet No Name → Eye Contact

Keep sessions short and upbeat. Use Darwin’s midday kibble to reinforce attention and consistency.

💛 Encouragement

The puppy stage is full of learning and growth. Darwin is bright, eager, and affectionate—he’s learning every day. With time, consistency, and patience, he’ll mature into a well-mannered, loyal companion.

You’re doing an excellent job. Stay consistent with crate, potty, and feeding routines—structure + positive engagement helps Darwin thrive.

🎓 Puppy Kindergarten

We strongly encourage enrolling in a Puppy Kindergarten or foundational obedience class. These classes reinforce manners and confidence in your puppy and strengthen your skills as a handler.

In our experience, early training is one of the top reasons Stokeshire families enjoy such amazing, lasting relationships with their dogs.
