🐾 Gus – Training Tips & Graduation Summary
Stokeshire Designer Doodles – Doodle School Graduate
Overview
Gus is a sweet, funny, and highly food-motivated puppy who has successfully completed his foundational Doodle School training. He’s eager to please, quick to connect with people, and always ready to work for a reward. His playful spirit and sense of humor make him a joy to be around.
While Gus has made great progress—especially in socialization and cue work—consistent, structured practice at home will help him continue to grow in crate training, stair confidence, and leash manners.
Crate Training
Current Skills & Observations
Enters crate willingly most of the time, especially when food or a chew is involved.
Can remain in crate 2–3 hours during the day without an accident if fully eliminated beforehand.
Occasionally protests for several minutes before settling (normal at his stage).
Sleeps through the night with a final potty break before bedtime.
Best Practices at Home
Cue & Reward: Use “kennel” and reward immediately with kibble or a stuffed Kong.
Short, Positive Sessions: Include practice crate times during the day, not just naps/overnight.
Location: Quiet, low-stimulation area; cover crate if needed to reduce distractions.
Chews & Enrichment: Provide crate-only toys or chews; rotate regularly.
Never Punish: Crate should always feel safe and positive.
Goal: Build Gus’s ability to settle quickly and remain calm for longer daytime stretches.

Potty Training
Success Strategies
Take out immediately after waking, 10–20 min after meals, and after play.
Keep a designated potty spot for scent association.
Cue “Go potty” and praise warmly within 3 seconds of finishing.
Supervise closely indoors; tether or crate when not directly watching.
Remove water 4–5 hours before bedtime.
Goal: Maintain schedule and supervision until fully reliable.
Leash Manners
Food-motivated and responds well to rewards for loose-leash walking.
Use short, engaging sessions to maintain focus.
Change pace/direction if he begins to pull.
Obedience & Cues
Focus Areas
Build duration on Sit and Down.
Strengthen recall in low-distraction areas.
Practice polite greetings with all four paws on the floor.
Socialization
Friendly, playful, and enjoys interacting with people and other dogs.
Continue the “100 New Experiences in 100 Days” approach — pair new sights, sounds, and textures with calm praise.
Enrichment & Energy
Daily Essentials
Mental: Puzzle toys, training games, scent work.
Physical: Regular walks, yard play, short drills.
Calm Time: Snuggles and crate/mat rest after activity.
Graduation Message
Gus has been a joy to work with. His playful nature, sense of humor, and love of food make him a delight to train. With patience, structure, and daily practice, he’ll continue to grow into a confident, well-mannered family member.
We highly recommend ongoing professional training to build on his skills, strengthen your bond, and ensure a lifetime of good habits. Dogs like Gus thrive when their people are active, engaged partners in the learning process.
