What Is a Guardian Home?

A dog in your home.
A role in ours.

Stokeshire raises all breeding dogs in homes — not kennels. The Guardian Home Program is how that’s possible at scale. A qualified family raises one of our top-selection dogs as a full family member, providing the home environment our program is built around.

The dog lives with you for the majority of its life. During planned breeding or whelping windows, it returns to Stokeshire temporarily. When the program concludes, it retires into your family permanently.

You provide a permanent, loving home. Stokeshire covers all breeding-related health, testing, and veterinary expenses. Each party’s investment in the dog is real, distinct, and recognized.

I
Chapter I

How the
program works.

Guardian dogs are Embark health-tested, COI-analyzed breeding candidates selected specifically for soundness of structure and temperament. When placed, the dog becomes a full member of your household — inside, as part of family life, raised the way every Stokeshire dog is meant to be raised.

Stokeshire retains all breeding rights for the duration of the program. All matings are planned and executed by Stokeshire. The Guardian family agrees not to allow the dog to mate with unapproved partners.

For dam guardians: Plan for a 1–2 week return during the breeding window, and a return approximately one week before the expected whelping date. The dam stays at Stokeshire until puppies are weaned.

For stud guardians: Plan for a 3–5 day availability window per breeding cycle. Stokeshire can sometimes arrange transport pickup when scheduling allows.

After approximately 4–6 litters or when the dog reaches age six, Stokeshire completes the spay or neuter at no cost. The dog you raised retires permanently into your family.

Chapter IV

What we
ask of you.

These requirements reflect what a Guardian placement genuinely needs to succeed. Each one reflects something learned from experience.

Quick reference
→ Fenced yard required
→ Prior dog experience
→ Indoor living only
→ Opposite-sex dogs must be fixed
→ Surgical insurance required
→ Canine Good Citizen encouraged
Dam guardians must reside within 120 miles of Medford, Wisconsin. This ensures timely transport for breeding and whelping windows without undue stress on the dog. Stud guardians may live anywhere in the United States — stud breeding logistics are more flexible, and pickup or drop-off can sometimes be arranged.
A fully fenced yard or equivalent secured outdoor space is required. Guardian dogs are active and — in the case of intact females — subject to attention from outside dogs. An unsecured environment creates both safety and program compliance risks.
Guardian families should have meaningful experience living with and caring for dogs. The program works best when the family can confidently manage training, socialization, and routine veterinary communication without relying entirely on Stokeshire for day-to-day guidance.
The Guardian dog must not be kept exclusively outdoors or in a kennel environment. Stokeshire raises dogs in homes because that environment produces the temperament outcomes the program is built around. That standard continues in the Guardian home.
If the household includes dogs of the opposite sex, those dogs must be fixed prior to placement. This prevents unplanned breeding, which would be a breach of the Guardian Home Contract and could compromise Stokeshire’s genetic program.
Guardian families commit to active socialization during critical developmental windows and ongoing throughout the dog’s life. Stokeshire works toward Canine Good Citizen certification as a shared benchmark and welcomes Guardian participation in that process.
Guardian families are required to carry pet insurance covering major surgical events. Stokeshire covers all breeding-related veterinary expenses, but day-to-day care, accidents, and illnesses are the Guardian family’s responsibility.
Guardian dogs require high-quality, premium nutrition appropriate for their life stage. Stokeshire provides food recommendations and is available to advise on transitions or dietary considerations. A Guardian dog’s health and body condition directly reflect the care it receives at home.
V
Chapter V

Ongoing
responsibilities.

These operational responsibilities are detailed in the Guardian Home Contract and reviewed at placement.

Guardian families are responsible for annual wellness exams, vaccinations, and routine care. Copies of all veterinary records must be provided to Stokeshire when requested. A working relationship with a veterinarian who offers reproductive health services is strongly encouraged for dam guardian placements.
Guardians maintain responsive communication with Stokeshire regarding scheduling for progesterone testing, mating, and whelping. Stokeshire provides advance notice, and Guardian families are expected to hold those dates. Flexibility from both parties is essential to the program functioning well.
Dam guardians plan for two scheduled returns per breeding cycle: approximately 1–2 weeks during the breeding window, and a return to Stokeshire approximately one week prior to the expected whelping date. The dam remains at Stokeshire until the puppies are weaned. Dates are established well in advance.
Stud guardians plan for a 3–5 day availability window per breeding cycle. Stokeshire can sometimes arrange transport pickup from the Guardian’s home when scheduling allows. Most stud guardians find the commitment manageable alongside normal household schedules.
Guardian dogs may not be bred with unapproved partners. All matings are planned and executed exclusively by Stokeshire. An unplanned breeding would be a material breach of the Guardian Home Contract.
Any serious illness, injury, or significant change in the dog’s health must be reported to Stokeshire promptly. Early communication allows Stokeshire to support the family with resources, guidance, or direct involvement when appropriate.
Program Disclosure

Transparency in every
arrangement.

Free Placement: When a Guardian puppy is placed at no cost, the placement itself serves as full compensation. There is no per-litter monetary reimbursement. The dog’s full market value ($4,500–$5,500) is gifted in exchange for participation and care.

50% Placement: When placed at a reduced cost, the Guardian family receives $500 per successful litter after all puppies have gone home.

Relocation: If a Guardian family moves during the program, an updated Guardian Home Contract must be executed to maintain compliance under Wisconsin DATCP License #514401-DS.
