Everything you need to deliver the Stokeshire training experience. Families are paying for two things: a well-started puppy, and proof that the work happened. You deliver both.
Your Work Order and Independent Contractor Agreement govern this placement. Where this page and your agreement differ, the agreement controls. This portal tells you how to run the work, not what you agreed to.
Your First 48 Hours
Work this list in order. Everything after it repeats on a weekly cycle.
Before the puppy arrives
- Read your Work Order end to end: dates, day rate, emergency spending cap, capacity, and deliverables
- Sign in at app.wisconsindesignerdoodles.com and confirm the assigned puppy appears on your dashboard
- Set the crate, the gated area, and the potty door and spot you will use for all four weeks
- Remove prohibited tools and hazards from the training space
Arrival day
- Weigh the puppy and record the weight in the first log
- Start the Daily Rhythm at the next scheduled block. Do not build a custom schedule
- Confirm the intake vet appointment for Week 1
- File the first Daily Training Log that evening, even if the day was short
Day two
- Name recognition reps begin, dozens per day, paid every time
- First crate nap on schedule, first Handling Ladder session: body track only
- First Rule of Twelve exposures logged by name, not as "socialized today"
By the end of week one
- Intake vet visit complete, records uploaded the same day
- Weekly Update to the family by Friday 5:00 PM with 2 photos and 1 video
- First Weekly Assessment in the App on Sunday, all sixteen areas
- First 15-minute Google Meet with the family scheduled
The Five Commitments
Doodle School is a four-week, in-home training program that begins when a puppy is eight weeks old. The training happens in your home. The proof happens in the Stokeshire Companion App.
The schedule below is the backbone of The Stokeshire Method. Meals, potty breaks, crate naps, and training happen at consistent times, every day.
Multiple 10 to 20 minute sessions per day. Puppies this age learn in minutes, not hours. End every session on a success.
A Daily Training Log every evening by 9:00 PM. A written Weekly Update by Friday 5:00 PM, a Weekly Assessment every Sunday, and a 15-minute Google Meet with the family each week.
Minimum 2 photos and 1 video, 30 seconds or longer at 1080p, per week. Warm, calm, natural-light images that match the brand standard below.
Same-day contact for anything unusual. Immediate contact for anything urgent. The escalation section below is the authoritative version, and it is short enough to read now.
Method and Prohibited Tools
Stokeshire training is reward-based. Puppies in the eight to twelve week window are forming their baseline response to novelty, handling, and correction. Aversive methods at this age can produce lasting fear responses, and their use ends the placement.
The Method
- Positive reinforcement with food, praise, and access
- Redirect unwanted behavior to a legal alternative
- Manage the environment so the puppy cannot rehearse the problem
- Add distance and slow down when the puppy shows stress
- Change one thing at a time: closer, louder, longer, or a new place, never two at once
- The puppy can stop it: a chin rest or station is the start button, and chin up means hands off
- End every session on a success the puppy can repeat
- Rest is a training tool. Most behavior problems at this age resolve with a nap
Never Used
- Prong, choke, slip, or electronic collars of any kind
- Alpha rolls, pinning, scruffing, or physical corrections
- Nose tapping, muzzle grabbing, or yelling as correction
- The crate as punishment
- Flooding: forcing exposure to something the puppy is avoiding
- Unsupervised access to other dogs, or any dog not fully vaccinated
- Any tool or method listed as prohibited in your Work Order
If a behavior is not resolving with reward-based work, that is an escalation, not a reason to change methods. Message Stokeshire the same day.
When Something Is Wrong
Three tiers. Use the highest one that fits. Nobody has ever been criticized here for escalating too early.
Questions about training, schedule, appetite, or behavior that are not urgent. Message Stokeshire the same day through the App or TRAINING_EMAIL_PLACEHOLDER, and note it in that evening's log. A Handling Read of 4 on any track is a Tier 1 same-day message, and that track pauses until Stokeshire clears it.
Anything that needs a clinic but is not time-critical. Contact Stokeshire for approval before booking. Preapproved veterinary costs are reimbursed with receipts per your agreement.
Delay could threaten life or health. In order:
- Seek veterinary care. Call the clinic on the way so they are ready
- Reach Stokeshire immediately, and no later than 30 minutes after you recognize the emergency
- Stay within your Work Order emergency spending cap if no authorized contact can be reached
- File a written incident report with supporting records within 12 hours
Treat as an emergency
- Not eating, weak, wobbly, or unresponsive: young puppies drop blood sugar fast
- Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, especially with blood or lethargy
- A distended, hard, or painful abdomen
- Trouble breathing, choking, or collapse
- Seizure or sudden loss of coordination
- Any trauma: fall, crush, vehicle, or another dog
- Suspected ingestion of a toxin, medication, or foreign object
- Bleeding that does not stop with pressure
The Daily Rhythm
The same skeleton every day, all four weeks. Times can flex by up to 30 minutes. The sequence does not. Potty breaks follow events, not only the clock: after every wake-up, every meal, and every play session. On leash, with treats, same door, same spot, one consistent cue.

The Stokeshire Companion App
Stokeshire Companion is the private portal where Doodle School becomes visible. Every log you enter flows straight to the family: the daily schedule with your check-offs, the photo of the day, your weekly narrative, and the Sunday assessment. Never batch-enter several days at once. A late log beats a fabricated one. Logs must be current before invoicing.

Voice check before you hit send
- Warm but precise. Would this read well out loud at the family's kitchen table?
- Specific. Is there at least one real number from your logs?
- Honest. Did you name the week's challenge without hiding it or overstating it?
- Safe. No promises, no "always," no "fully trained," no "guaranteed."
Four Weeks, Then Graduation
The standard program begins at 8 weeks and runs four weeks. Each week builds on the last, shaping confident, adaptable family companions through structured routine, positive reinforcement, and intentional socialization.
Age 8 Weeks
Arrival and Foundation
Establish routine, crate conditioning, and the potty schedule. Introduce name recognition, Sit, and Come.

Age 9 Weeks
Confidence and Socialization

Age 10 Weeks
Self-Control and New Cues
Refine bite inhibition and emotional awareness. Introduce Place, Down, and Stay.
- The 6:15 PM block becomes formal cue training
- Bite inhibition: redirect to a legal chew, log redirects daily
- Leash work doubles, add gentle direction changes
- Handling Ladder: one nail, one line brushed to the skin, dry tub, dryer on across the room, clippers running through your hand

Age 11 Weeks
Polish and Proofing
Proof every cue with mild distractions. Prepare the family for handoff.

- Handling Ladder: short sequences with breaks, water on one paw, a second person repeats every track at its earned rung

Age 12 Weeks
Handoff and Go-Home
Final health milestones, final grooming, and a clean handoff.
- Final vet visit, records uploaded the same day
- Final grooming before the family arrives, run as a Ladder session, not a marathon
- Final Assessment feeds the family's Program Completion Report, including the earned rung on every Handling track
- Continuation Plan: schedule, exact cue words, reinforcement tips, and the home handling routine
- Graduation media set uploaded before go-home
Approved Bootcamp extensions and returning dogs run the same rhythm, the same logging cadence, and the same rubric. Nothing about reporting changes during an extension.
Every puppy in Doodle School is someone's future family member. Train them that way.
The Sixteen-Area Rubric
Score each area from 1 to 10 every Sunday, in the App, under Rubric and Protocol. Score what you saw this week, not the trend you hope for. Week 1 scores of 2 to 4 are normal. A 10 is rare and earned. An honest 6 with a plan beats an inflated 9 the family cannot reproduce at home. Scores are visible to the family, so every score should be one you could defend out loud on the weekly Meet.

Grooming and Handling Tolerance is scored from the Handling Ladder below. Ten tracks at rung 2 or higher is a 6. Salon-ready tracks (paws, brush, dryer, clippers, table) at rung 3 or higher is an 8. Any track at rung 0 caps the score at 4.
The Handling Ladder
A Poodle-type coat is groomed nearly every day of the dog's life. Every session with hands on the puppy is either a deposit or a withdrawal, and the first professional groom usually lands between 12 and 16 weeks, right after go-home. What you build in four weeks is what the groomer inherits.
The Ladder has ten tracks and six rungs. You work one rung at a time, and the puppy earns the next one with evidence, not with the calendar. Freezing is not passing. A still puppy with a tight body, wide eyes, and refused food has not consented. Score it a 3.
The four rules for every session
Start below the line
Begin where the puppy notices the thing and stays loose. Clippers across the room, not on the paw. If the puppy cannot eat, leans away, or goes tight, you started too high. Come down. Flooding is a terms breach.
The tool predicts good things
Tool appears, food starts. Tool leaves, food stops. The puppy does not have to hold still to earn it. You are changing what the tool means before you ask for anything.
The puppy can stop it
Chin rest on a folded towel, or standing on the mat, is the start button. Chin up means hands off, no comment, wait. Do not finish the stroke first. A puppy who learns she can stop the brush is the puppy who lets you brush her.
One dial at a time
Distance, sound, duration, pressure, body region, handler, or location. Never two in the same rep. Sessions run 30 to 120 seconds per track, one to three times a day, and end while the puppy still wants more.
Ten tracks, six rungs
Score against the sentence in the cell, not against a feeling. The far right column is the standard a mature dog maintains for life; most Doodle School puppies leave with rung 2 or 3 on every track.
The Handling Read
Record the peak read for each track worked. The decision column is not optional.
- 0RelaxedLoose body, soft face, normal food, stays or returns on her own. Repeat, or raise one dial.
- 1Mild concernSingle lip lick, yawn, head turn, or brief paw lift; re-engages and eats. Hold this level.
- 2ModerateLeaning away, sustained tension, slower or rougher food taking, repeated displacement. Stop raising; drop one dial.
- 3HighFreeze, panting unrelated to heat, escape attempts, refuses valued food, trembling. End the procedure. Recover. Resume later at an easier rung.
- 4DefensiveGrowl, snarl, air snap, bite attempt, violent escape, cannot recover. Safety stop. Tier 1 message to Stokeshire the same day. That track does not run again until cleared.
How a rung is earned
- Three sessions at that rung, on at least two different days
- Each with a read of 0 or 1
- Recovery within 10 seconds of release: body loosens, she comes back
- Food taken normally, for this puppy
- Returns to the mat or offers the chin within 3 seconds of release
- Rung 5 also needs one session with a second handler
- Two consecutive reads of 2 or higher at the earned rung drops it by one until re-earned. Expect this in adolescence. It is normal.
Coat rules that are not optional
- No surface brushing. Line brush to the skin, then check with a metal comb. If the comb catches, a mat is starting.
- No bath on an unbrushed coat. Water tightens mats against the skin.
- No routine ear plucking. Trim canal-opening hair with safety shears. Plucking is a veterinary decision for infected, hair-packed canals only.
- No dematting through pain. A tight mat on irritated skin is a Tier 2 message, not a training goal.
- No high-velocity dryer in the first two weeks. Towel and low airflow only.
- No close scissor work on a moving puppy. Face and paw pads are rung 3 and above, and only if you have been shown how.
How to log it
Until the Handling module is live in the App, log each track worked in the Daily Training Log text as: track, rung attempted, read, and whether she came back. Example: Paws 2, read 1, returned. Brush 2, read 0, returned. Dryer 1, read 2, did not return, dropped to sight only. When the module ships, the same four fields plus recovery, food response, handler, and location become a form that takes under two minutes.
What you say to the family
Families see rung names, never numbers: Not yet, Getting to know it, Comfortable with touch, First real step, Working sequences, Groom ready. They see the read as three words: easy, working on it, too much today. Do not use the words desensitized, bombproof, force-free, or tolerant in any family update. Do not tell a family a puppy will love the groomer. Tell them which rung each track reached, on what day, and what comes next.
The Stokeshire Look
Warm, calm, intentional, quietly luxurious. Every image you upload is the brand. Training photos go directly to families and become the record of your work. Use your home as the set. That is one of our strongest advantages over kennel-based programs.

Facility feel. Fluorescent overhead lighting, chain-link fencing, wire grate surface, neon plastic toys. This reads as a kennel, not a home. A family seeing this photo would not feel reassured.

Stokeshire feel. Natural window light, warm amber tones, hardwood floors, organic textures. The puppy looks calm and settled. A family seeing this photo feels confident their puppy is raised in a real home with real care.

Weekly Minimum
2 photos and 1 video, uploaded with your Friday update. Video: 1080p minimum, 30 seconds or longer, horizontal, steady. Aim for one Training Milestone and one Lifestyle shot each week. Finish before uploading: warm the white balance slightly, lower highlights. VSCO A6 or C1, or the Lightroom Mobile equivalent. Before you upload, check that the puppy is in focus with sharp eyes, the light is natural and warm, the background is free of clutter and wire, the body language is relaxed, and the frame would belong on the Stokeshire Instagram.
The Rule of Twelve
Each new experience should be safe, positive, and rewarding. Pair every exposure with treats and calm praise. If the puppy seems unsure, slow down and add distance. Log every exposure by name in the daily log, not as "socialized today."

Training Partner FAQ
Rates, caps, capacity, and term are defined in your Work Order. The answers below describe practice, not contract terms.
What is the goal of the Doodle School program?
To shape confident, adaptable family companions through crate conditioning, housebreaking, leash skills, impulse control, and intentional socialization in a calm home environment. Every puppy should leave training ready for real family life. We describe where a puppy is, never what a puppy will always do.
When does training start and how long is it?
The standard program begins at 8 weeks and runs four weeks, with graduation at 12 weeks. Bootcamp extensions are available case by case once approved by Stokeshire, at the rate in your Work Order. The reporting cadence does not change during an extension.
What should the puppy know by graduation?
- Comfortable with crate time and a predictable potty routine
- Polite leash skills for short walks
- Responds to Sit, Down, Place, Come, and Stay with reinforcement
- Calm recovery after novelty exposure
- Adaptable in new rooms and environments
- Rung 2 or higher on every Handling Ladder track, with the earned rung recorded per track
Families receive a Continuation Plan at handoff: the daily schedule, the exact cue words used, reinforcement tips, and the home handling routine.
The puppy was fine with paws on Monday and pulled away on Thursday. Did I do something wrong?
Probably not. Check three things in order. First, pain: a broken nail, a sore pad, a mat between the toes. If anything looks off, that is a Tier 2 message. Second, the dial: did Thursday's session change two things at once, a new room and a longer hold? Third, the day: was she tired, hungry, or coming off a big exposure? Drop one rung, run three easy reps, and log the read. If the read is 3 twice in a row on the same track, message Stokeshire the same day. A read of 4 pauses the track until cleared.
Who handles de-worming, flea and tick, and vaccinations?
The Training Partner administers de-worming and flea and tick prevention per the schedule in the Work Order, logging each dose. The intake vet visit happens in Week 1 and the final vet visit at graduation, with records uploaded the same day. 12-week vaccinations are not covered under the standard four-week program unless the puppy enters an approved Bootcamp extension. The family's veterinarian handles rabies.
What records do I need to maintain?
- Daily Training Log, every evening
- Socialization exposures, logged by name as you go
- Handling Ladder sessions, by track, rung, and read
- Health and medical log, including the Wisconsin medical log
- De-worming and flea and tick treatment log
- Weekly media uploads
- Incident reports, as needed
All logs must be current before invoicing.
How many puppies can I take at once?
Four at a time is the ceiling, and your Work Order may set a lower number. Every puppy in your care gets the full program: full logging, full media, full attention. If you cannot deliver that, tell us before accepting a placement.
Can I offer my own services to a Stokeshire family?
No. Non-solicitation and confidentiality terms in your Independent Contractor Agreement apply during and after the placement, and this portal and its materials are covered by them. Route any family request for additional services to Stokeshire.

How a Billable Day Is Determined
A Doodle School day is not twenty-four uniform hours. It is four blocks of structured care, drawn from the Daily Rhythm. You are paid for the blocks you deliver.
Possession is recorded in the Companion app at the moment a puppy changes hands. The person receiving the puppy records the receipt, which closes the previous holder's possession automatically. Everything below is calculated from those times. Nothing is entered by hand.

The overnight block belongs to the date on which it begins. Your Work Order states the block profile for your engagement. Bootcamp, à la carte, and day training run different profiles, and the values always total one full day.

When a day is billable
A Training Session is work on one or more items from that puppy's current developmental week. Record the items worked, a written observation, and at least one photograph or video. Session length is recorded for the puppy's progress record and for the family. Session length does not determine compensation.
When training is not possible. If you have the puppy and perform daily care but training cannot reasonably be done because of the puppy's health, veterinary direction, a Stokeshire instruction, or a documented safety condition, record the reason. The day is billable at your normal rate.
When the puppy is not with you. Time the puppy spends away from you at Stokeshire's or the owner's request, or overnight in veterinary care, is not billable. The scheduled handoff date moves out by one day for each full day lost, unless Stokeshire tells you otherwise in writing.
Worked examples
You hand a puppy to another trainer at 3:01 PM.
You held the morning in full and 2 h 31 m of the afternoon, which is under half. You earn 0.25. She held 2 h 59 m of the afternoon, the evening and the overnight. She earns 0.75.
Day totals 1.00You receive a puppy at 11:59 PM.
You held 6 h 1 m of the overnight block, which is over half. You earn 0.25 for that day. Your first full day is the following one.
A puppy arrives at 10:00 AM and goes home at 4:00 PM eight days later.
Arrival day: 2 h 30 m of the morning is under half, then afternoon, evening and overnight. You earn 0.75. Seven full days follow. Departure day: the morning in full and 4 h of the afternoon, over half. You earn 0.50.
Total 8.25 daysA puppy is unwell for two days and no training is possible.
You keep the puppy, perform daily care and record the reason on both days. Both days are billable at your normal rate and divide into blocks in the usual way.
Total 2.00 daysA puppy spends one night at the veterinarian.
The overnight block is not billable, and neither is any other block the puppy was away for. The scheduled handoff date moves out by one day.

Your rate is stated in your agreement and in each Work Order. This page does not set it.

Loose-leash walking should be built before it is tested.
The strongest available evidence does not support treating leash walking as a contest of physical control. A more defensible model is to teach a puppy a set of component skills, then progressively combine those skills under increasing environmental difficulty.
Those component skills are orientation to the handler, reinforcement history near the handler, yielding rather than fighting restraint, environmental confidence, recovery from distraction, and access to sniffing and movement. Veterinary behavior organizations now strongly favor reward-based training and advise against leash corrections, intimidation, flooding, and pain-based equipment. Observational and experimental work likewise associates aversive-heavy training with poorer welfare outcomes without demonstrating a general effectiveness advantage.1
The practical consequence is important. Puppies should first learn equipment comfort, voluntary following, handler orientation, hand targeting, check-ins, start and stop movement, and reinforcement-zone behavior in easy environments. Only then should the trainer systematically add distance, duration, and distraction. This follows established learning principles: newly acquired behavior should be reinforced densely, and training difficulty should rise gradually.2
Early leash work also has a developmental purpose beyond obedience. The first months of life contain particularly important periods for environmental and social learning. AAHA describes roughly 10 to 20 weeks as an intense period for learning about novel environments and warns that forced exposure of fearful puppies can increase rather than reduce fear. Early exposure therefore should mean safe, positive, voluntary experience, not compulsory greetings or flooding.3
The widespread claim that puppies should receive exactly five minutes of exercise per month of age is not an evidence-based physiological limit. PDSA explicitly states that no scientific evidence supports that formula. Puppies nevertheless should not be treated as miniature endurance athletes: repetitive, high-impact, forced exercise deserves more caution than self-paced exploration, sniffing, play, and short training outings. Exercise dose should be individualized around fatigue, gait, health, environment, body size, temperature, and veterinary advice rather than calculated from a single clock formula.4
Equipment matters primarily as a safety and force-distribution variable, not as a substitute for training. Back-clip harnesses can permit dogs to generate more pulling force than neck collars, but that does not establish that harnesses teach pulling. Neck collars can concentrate substantial pressure, while harness design can alter gait. The present literature therefore supports fitting equipment to the individual rather than claiming that one device is biomechanically neutral or universally superior. For a puppy that may unexpectedly hit the end of the leash, a comfortable, properly fitted non-tightening harness is generally the more conservative default, with a flat collar retained for identification and, where appropriate, a safety backup.5
Leash pressure deserves special caution. The training term “opposition reflex” is much more established in practitioner vocabulary than in canine experimental literature. There is good evidence that dogs exert substantial opposing leash forces, but little direct evidence validating a single innate “opposition reflex” mechanism as the explanation. The best-supported puppy protocol is therefore not to repeatedly pull until the puppy “gives in.” Instead, condition tiny amounts of leash tension as information: minimal directional pressure, immediate slack when the puppy orients or steps toward it, and reinforcement for that response. If pressure causes freezing, scrambling, coughing, avoidance, or escalating resistance, the criterion is too difficult.6
Sniffing should generally be treated as part of a healthy walk rather than as disobedience. Research on formal nosework, not ordinary sniff walks, has found improved positive judgment bias after olfactory activity, while a recent review concludes that the evidence for broad welfare benefits of scent activities is promising but still incomplete. It is therefore reasonable to incorporate permission-based sniffing as both enrichment and a functional reinforcer, while avoiding stronger claims such as “sniffing always lowers cortisol” or “sniffing neurologically calms every dog,” which are not established.7

Evidence Base, Development, and Training Philosophy
Leash walking is a compound skill, not a single behavior. This part sets out the model the rest of the system depends on.
A puppy that walks beautifully in the kitchen and appears to forget everything on the sidewalk has not become stubborn. The environment changed, so the conditions under which the behavior must occur changed with it. Part 01 explains why that happens and what follows from it: four processes that must stay distinct, a developmental timeline built from veterinary guidance and clearly labelled practitioner estimates, and a definition of socialization that favors calm observation over compulsory contact.

1.1The central model
Leash walking is not one behavior. It is a compound skill involving locomotion, orientation, reinforcement, frustration tolerance, responses to restraint, environmental learning, and social behavior. That helps explain why a puppy can perform beautifully in a kitchen and appear to “forget everything” outside: changing the environment changes the stimulus conditions under which the behavior must occur. AAHA explicitly recommends beginning new training in low-distraction contexts and rewarding newly learned behavior consistently before shifting toward intermittent reinforcement.2

Exact behavioral development varies by individual, genetics, early experience, health, and environment. 1.4Socialization is not indiscriminate contact R · V
The evidence supports positive exposure to people, animals, places, surfaces, noises, transport, and other likely adult-life stimuli. It does not establish that a puppy should physically greet every person or dog. AAHA specifically warns that continuing exposure when a puppy is withdrawing or fearful can produce sensitization rather than resilience. Research has also found that appropriately vaccinated puppies attending controlled classes were not at greater parvovirus risk in the studied population, supporting the veterinary consensus that socialization need not automatically wait until the entire vaccine series is complete. The actual exposure plan should be decided with the puppy’s veterinarian based on local infectious-disease risk.3
1.5Neutrality is a better functional goal than universal sociability V · P
A puppy who sees a cyclist, child, stranger, dog, truck, or automatic door and can observe, recover, and return attention to the handler has acquired a more transferable life skill than one who expects access to every interesting stimulus. This is a synthesis from socialization and learning principles rather than a direct trial comparing “neutrality training” against greeting-based socialization.3
Building the Leash Skill From the Ground Up
Equipment becomes good news first. Everything else is layered on top of that one association.
This part is the working core of the system. It moves from the first time a harness touches a puppy through the conditioning of leash tension as information, the engagement behaviors that make a leash almost unnecessary, a ten-stage curriculum organized by functional difficulty rather than geography, and the reinforcement decisions that decide whether the skill survives contact with the real world.
Two ideas repeat throughout. Reinforce densely while the puppy is learning, and change only one thing at a time when the puppy is struggling.

The following is a synthesis of reward-based learning guidance, veterinary equipment guidance, and current professional standards.1
Equipment becomes good news first. Show the collar or harness, let the puppy investigate, then pair handling and fastening with food, play, or another valued consequence. Begin with seconds rather than demanding prolonged wear if the puppy is scratching, rolling, freezing, or biting the equipment.
Add a lightweight fixed leash in a controlled space. Supervised leash dragging can help some puppies habituate to the sensation, but only in an uncluttered area with direct supervision, because a trailing line can snag. Do not use a retractable leash or long line for this introduction.
Teach following without tension. Back away or move laterally, mark the puppy for orienting and following, and deliver reinforcement near the location where future walking will occur. Do this before trying to “walk around the block.”
Pick up the leash while preserving slack. Let the leash move with the puppy. Reward voluntary orientation, movement with the handler, and return into the preferred reinforcement zone.
Introduce stops and starts. Move two or three steps, stop, reinforce a check-in or pause, then move again. Movement itself begins to acquire reinforcing value because walking resumes after coordinated behavior.
Introduce gentle direction changes. Turn with body movement, a verbal cue, a hand target, or food placement rather than snapping the leash.
End before deterioration. The first sessions should teach “this equipment predicts understandable, successful interaction,” not “the leash is the thing that prevents me from reaching everything.”
Leash jerking, dragging, prolonged restraint battles, forced approaches to frightening stimuli, or repeatedly allowing the puppy to accelerate into the end of the leash. Veterinary behavior and current professional training standards explicitly reject leash corrections or other intentional aversive interventions for foundational training. V · T1
2.2Leash-pressure conditioning
A useful distinction is between leash tension as unavoidable physical information and leash pressure deliberately used as an aversive consequence. Real walks inevitably produce brief tension, and measurements show that dog-handler dyads can generate considerable forces. Current reward-based guidance nevertheless argues against teaching through leash jerks or deliberately uncomfortable pressure.8
About the “opposition reflex.” Many trainers use this phrase to describe a dog pushing or pulling against restraint. The behavioral phenomenon is real: dogs sometimes continue or increase pulling against restraint, and harness and collar studies quantify substantial pulling. But direct canine research does not establish a single discrete “opposition reflex” that explains leash pulling. Pulling can also reflect reinforcement history, motivation to reach something, fear, gait mechanics, or equipment comfort. The term is therefore best regarded as a practitioner shorthand, not a settled mechanistic diagnosis. R · P9

- Start in a quiet room with a comfortable harness and slack leash.
- Present the smallest directional tension that the puppy can notice without showing distress.
- Simultaneously give an already-conditioned orienting cue, hand target, or enticing body movement.

- Eventually let tiny accidental tension predict “orient back toward the handler,” after which slack and reinforcement follow.
This procedure deliberately layers positive reinforcement onto the pressure-release contingency rather than depending on escalating discomfort. That distinction is consistent with AVSAB’s preference for reward-based learning and its rejection of aversive negative-reinforcement strategies.1
Pressure is too high if the puppy braces, coughs, scrambles backward, paws frantically at equipment, stops taking food that it normally values, freezes, or repeatedly tries to escape. Collar-pressure studies show that forces on the neck can become substantial. “Gentle” should therefore mean behaviorally minimal, not whatever the handler’s hand happens to regard as gentle.5
2.3Engagement before walking
Useful component behaviors include name response, orientation, hand target, voluntary following, check-ins, proximity reinforcement, recall turns, and movement games. Reward-based learning principles support reinforcing these small components before chaining them into more difficult behavior.2
Orientation → one step with handler → two steps → turn → pause → reorient → release.
A hand target is particularly useful because it gives the dog an active behavior during U-turns and repositioning without physically pulling the puppy into place. Check-ins should initially be captured rather than constantly demanded: when the puppy voluntarily turns toward the handler, mark and reinforce it. Over time the environment can itself become the reward for checking in.
2.4Progressive loose-leash curriculum
The exact environment ranking is puppy-specific. A backyard full of squirrels may be harder than an empty veterinary lobby. The following ten stages therefore describe functional difficulty, not universal geographic order. V · T · P10

Attempting to fade reinforcement while increasing difficulty. New contexts are new versions of the behavior. Increase reinforcement again when the environment becomes harder.2
2.5Reinforcement system
A reinforcer is defined by its effect on behavior, not by the trainer’s intent. Food, toys, social contact, access to sniffing, forward movement, greeting permission, freedom to explore, or distance from something uncomfortable can all influence behavior, although their value varies by dog and moment. Research on canine preference assessment confirms substantial value in identifying what actually functions as reinforcement for the individual. R11
Placement matters. P If the intended reinforcement zone is beside the handler, feed there, not a meter in front, which can create forward acceleration. For turns, reinforcement slightly behind the handler can help complete the turn. For check-ins, food can be delivered near the handler and then followed by “go sniff,” allowing the environment to reinforce returning attention.
Timing matters. V · R Marking should identify the desired moment before the dog has moved on to another behavior. A clicker is not demonstrably necessary; small comparative work has found voice and click markers capable of producing similar shaping outcomes, so consistency and timing matter more than fetishizing one device.10
Reinforcement should be dense during acquisition and thinned after fluency, not before. V · R AAHA recommends rewarding new behavior every time initially and moving toward intermittent reinforcement after acquisition. Thinning should be gradual; a 2025 proof-of-concept study also suggests that conditioned verbal affirmation may reduce frustration for some dogs during reinforcement thinning, although the sample was only four dogs.2

The Premack principle broadly predicts that a higher-probability activity can reinforce a lower-probability one, but reviews note that its applied evidence base is less extensive than casual references sometimes suggest. In leash training, “walk with me five steps, then go sniff that tree” is a defensible practical application, but it should be described as learning-theory-informed practice rather than a leash-specific, experimentally validated formula. 2.6The Three Ds
Distance, Duration, Distraction provide a simple difficulty-control framework. P grounded in learning theory.
Increase one while holding the others stable. A puppy that can walk 30 seconds beside you in the kitchen should not simultaneously be asked for five minutes beside you, 10 feet from another puppy, at a new outdoor café. That is three simultaneous criterion jumps.
This follows the broader behavior-modification principle of presenting challenges below the point that elicits the unwanted response and gradually increasing stimulus intensity.2
Walk Architecture, Sniffing, Socialization, and Real-World Reliability
Structured freedom, not sniff prohibition. Neutrality, not greetings. Difficulty chosen by the puppy in front of you.
A walk is not one thing. It is a sequence of training blocks, structured travel, and decompression, and the same outing can move among all three. Part 03 gives trainers the vocabulary and the scale to design that sequence: a four-cue system for sniffing, three walk types with their own rules, a ten-level Environmental Difficulty Scale with a progression decision flow, and the leash-specific view of socialization, reactivity prevention, and the difference between loose-leash walking and heel.

3.1Sniffing policy
Ordinary walking and formal nosework are not identical, so the evidence should not be overstated. In one controlled study, dogs given nosework training developed a more positive judgment bias than dogs doing heelwork; a later scoping review found encouraging but heterogeneous evidence regarding scent-based activity and welfare. A 2026 scent-work study found elevated heart rate during searching rather than a simple universal “calming” physiological effect. R7

A four-cue vocabulary is sufficient
The actual words are irrelevant; consistency is what matters.
Sniffing can serve three functions: enrichment, information gathering, and reinforcement for prior walking behavior. It need not be available every second, but a walk in which the puppy is never allowed to investigate the environment unnecessarily sacrifices one of the dog’s primary sensory behaviors. That is a welfare-oriented inference supported by scent research rather than a direct trial of puppy sniff walks.7

Difficulty depends on the individual puppy, not merely on location. Leash-tension research found higher tension on a more challenging course, supporting the intuitive conclusion that environmental complexity materially changes leash behavior. R13

Level 10 is not a graduation requirement. Environmental neutrality means the dog can function in environments relevant to its life, not that every pet dog must tolerate festivals, crowded stores, or sidewalk patios. P
3.4Socialization while on leash
The goal in puppyhood is to build a large library of safe observations and voluntary interactions, not to accumulate greetings. Exposure should include appropriate examples of adults, children, calm dogs, traffic, bicycles, wheeled objects, veterinary environments, elevators, door mechanisms, unusual surfaces, sounds, clothing, and transportation where these are likely to matter in the dog’s life. Positive exposure during sensitive developmental periods is widely recommended by veterinary guidelines and supported by the socialization literature. R · V3
A good leash-socialization trial often looks boring:
Puppy sees dog → puppy watches → handler reinforces → puppy disengages → both continue walking.
That repetition can be more useful for future urban behavior than:
Puppy sees dog → leash tightens → puppy drags handler over → exciting greeting occurs.
The latter arrangement risks reinforcing pulling and creating an expectation that seeing dogs predicts social access. This is a learning-theory inference rather than evidence that greetings themselves cause leash reactivity.2
3.5Reactivity prevention
Early prevention should center on five skills: observation at distance, voluntary disengagement, reinforcement around triggers, predictable exit behaviors, and frustration tolerance. V · T AAHA recommends avoiding forced exposure to fear-inducing stimuli, and desensitization and counterconditioning guidance likewise emphasizes working below the intensity that elicits distress.3
Normal puppy excitement is typically brief and recoverable: pulling toward a dog, bouncing, or vocalizing followed by rapid reorientation once distance changes. A more concerning pattern is increasing intensity or frequency of barking or lunging, prolonged hard staring, repeated inability to disengage, attempts to flee, escalating trigger distances, redirected biting, or slow recovery. Capturing check-ins, teaching hand targets, using environmental rewards, breaking walks into short training and sniffing blocks, using U-turns before triggers, and manipulating the Three Ds are highly coherent with learning science and contemporary professional practice, but most have not been isolated in controlled puppy leash-training trials. Debated practices. Trainers differ over whether tight-leash walking should always stop immediately, whether front-clip or back-clip harnesses are preferable, whether very light pressure-release should be deliberately taught, and how quickly reinforcement should be thinned. Current evidence favors analyzing function rather than enforcing universal mechanical rules.16
Weak evidence. Strong claims about a canine “opposition reflex,” precise age-specific attention spans, exact numbers of repetitions required for loose-leash walking, exact trigger-distance formulas, claims that sniff walks reliably reduce physiological stress, and claims that Y-shaped harnesses are always biomechanically neutral exceed the current evidence. Harness studies are often small and sometimes produce counterintuitive results, while scent-work evidence remains promising rather than conclusive.17
Unsupported folk rules. The five-minutes-per-month formula lacks scientific validation; harnesses have not been shown to teach pulling merely by being worn; and the puppy does not need to remain behind the human to establish a social hierarchy.4
7.2Major research gaps
The largest limitation is that there are surprisingly few controlled trials of puppy-specific loose-leash curricula. Much of the available evidence concerns adult companion dogs, shelter dogs, general learning theory, equipment biomechanics, or broader puppy socialization. Consequently, widely used exercises such as reinforcement-zone work, leash-pressure yielding, check-in capture, and environmental-release schedules are usually extrapolations from established learning processes rather than individually validated protocols.6
There is no well-established dose-response literature determining optimal formal walking distance or duration by puppy age, breed size, skeletal maturity, surface, or gait. The absence of evidence supporting the five-minute rule should therefore not be misread as evidence that unlimited repetitive exercise is harmless; it means that a precise universal threshold has not been established.4
Equipment research also needs larger, longitudinal studies. Existing work documents neck pressures, pulling forces, intraocular-pressure effects, and changes in gait, but those surrogate measures do not directly tell us the long-term incidence of injury for a puppy wearing one well-fitted device versus another. The 2026 veterinary review explicitly identifies this gap.5
Likewise, studies showing that dogs can pull harder in back-clip harnesses do not establish whether repeated harness use alters later learned pulling across equipment conditions. That specific question would require longitudinal randomization and cross-over assessment after training, evidence that is currently lacking.9
Sniffing research requires similar restraint in interpretation. Formal nosework has been associated with more optimistic judgment bias, but ordinary puppy sniff walks have not been shown to produce all of the physiological or emotional benefits sometimes claimed in popular training media. Recent reviews explicitly call for additional work.7
Finally, there is a need for validated, practical leash-training outcome measures. Instrumented leash-tension meters demonstrate that objective measurement is feasible, but trainers still lack standardized puppy benchmarks incorporating slack-leash percentage, spontaneous orientation, recovery time, distraction disengagement, affect, and environmental confidence.6
7.3The ten most important principles of puppy leash training
A puppy that is frightened or overwhelmed should receive more safety and distance, not stronger correction. Forced exposure can worsen fear. V3

Build a puppy that chooses to stay connected to you by making slack-leash movement, check-ins, safety, sniffing, and exploration work together as a reinforcement system. Then raise environmental difficulty only as fast as the puppy can remain confident and successful.1
Teaching Your Puppy to Walk on Leash
Your puppy does not know what a leash means. At first, the goal is not to walk far. The goal is to help your puppy learn that being connected to you is safe, understandable, and rewarding.
Veterinary behavior organizations recommend reward-based training and advise against leash jerks and other intentionally aversive methods.1 Everything below follows from that.
Start inside. Let your puppy wear a comfortable collar or harness for short periods while good things happen. Attach a light leash and reward the puppy for looking at you and following you. Then pick up the leash and practice a few steps at a time.18
Reward the behavior you want before the puppy starts pulling. When your puppy walks near you with a slack leash, mark that moment and reward it. Food is convenient, but sniffing, continuing forward, playing, or being released to explore can also become rewards.2
Let your puppy sniff. Sniffing is normal dog behavior, and scent-based activity has promising welfare benefits. Teach a phrase such as “go sniff” so your puppy learns that walking with you can earn freedom to explore.7
Do not make every person or dog a greeting opportunity. Your puppy can learn something valuable simply by seeing another dog, remaining comfortable, and then turning back toward you. Never force a frightened puppy closer in the name of socialization.3
When pulling starts, ask why. A puppy dragging toward a smell needs different help from a puppy pulling home because it is frightened. For excitement, make access depend on a slack leash and check-ins. For fear, give the puppy more distance. For exhaustion, stop. For sudden persistent reluctance or pain, contact your veterinarian.21
Do not worry about making every walk perfect. Puppies sniff, zig-zag, stop suddenly, get distracted, and temporarily lose skills in new places. Make the exercise easier when the puppy repeatedly struggles. Good training should look easier over time because the trainer controls difficulty.2
There is no scientific rule saying every puppy may walk only five minutes per month of age. Avoid exhausting, repetitive, high-impact exercise, but judge activity by the individual puppy and consult your veterinarian about health- or breed-specific restrictions.4
A puppy that is comfortable in equipment, usually leaves slack in the leash, checks in voluntarily, can stop and change direction with you, can sniff without towing you, notices ordinary distractions without needing to greet them, and recovers quickly after excitement.

Grooming readiness should be built before it is tested.
A Poodle-type coat is groomed nearly every day of the dog's life. That is thousands of sessions with human hands and tools on the dog, and every one of them either deposits or withdraws from the same account. The strongest available evidence does not support treating grooming as something a dog is made to endure. It supports systematically changing what handling, tools, sounds, and positions predict, while teaching the dog a way to participate.
Grooming-specific trials remain scarce, so exact prescriptions such as "two minutes a day for six weeks" are practical frameworks, not validated doses. The behavioral foundation, however, is unusually strong. AAHA defines desensitization as presenting a stimulus below the level that elicits the unwanted response and increasing it gradually, defines counterconditioning as pairing that stimulus with something the animal wants, and warns that flooding can worsen sensitization or produce behavioral shutdown.1 AVSAB's review concludes that reward-based methods offer advantages over aversive training in welfare and effectiveness and that force, pain, and intimidation should not be used.2
The developmental case for starting early is direct. A 2025 study of 4,497 dogs found adverse experience in the first six months of life to be the strongest predictor of adult fear and aggression, with the size of the effect varying by breed.3 The first professional groom typically lands between 12 and 16 weeks, inside that window. What a puppy learns about restraint, dryers, and clippers in that period tends to persist.
Stillness is not the criterion. A 2026 grooming study found autonomic stress rising across grooming phases, with drying producing the lowest heart-rate variability, and found that behavioral suppression during restraint, nail trimming, and drying correlated with that stress.4 Veterinary behavior guidance lists freezing alongside trembling and escape as a sign of distress.1 A still dog with a tight body, wide eyes, and refused food has not accepted anything. Trainers score the whole picture: loose body, soft face, normal food, and, most telling, whether the dog comes back on her own after release.
The Stokeshire system organizes this work as a ladder. Ten tracks cover the job: body, paws, brush, ears, face, bath, dryer, clippers, table, and lift. Each track has six rungs from not yet to maintenance. A rung is earned by evidence, never by the calendar: three sessions on two or more days with a low stress read, fast recovery, normal food, and voluntary re-engagement. Rungs are combined into a Groom Readiness Index for trainers and translated into three plain-language tiers for families. Families see rung names and the tier. They never see the number.
For this coat, the behavioral work sits beside a maintenance requirement that cannot be postponed. Matting is a welfare problem: chronic mats are associated with skin disease, infection, soiling, and constriction injury, and long-coated dogs including Poodles and Goldendoodles are over-represented in serious grooming welfare cases.5 A severely matted dog is not a desensitization project. A humane clip-down now and a rebuilt routine afterward is kinder than weeks of pulling.

Evidence Base, Development, and Training Philosophy
Handling is a compound skill, not a single behavior. This part sets out the model the rest of the system depends on.
A puppy who tolerated the brush at ten weeks and hides from it at eight months has not become stubborn. Something in the chain changed: a mat that pulled, a dryer that was too close, an adolescent nervous system that reads novelty differently. Part 01 explains why grooming is a different problem for this coat, what the early-adversity and welfare literature actually shows, why a still dog is not a calm dog, and what follows for the developmental timeline.

1.1Why this coat changes the problem R · V · T
A short-coated dog can go a long time without a brush. A Poodle or Poodle cross cannot. The Poodle standard describes a dense, naturally curly coat, and the Poodle Club of America states that Poodles require regular clipping and grooming.6 Coat in crosses is less predictable: the Golden Retriever Club of America notes that Goldendoodles vary substantially in texture and may both shed and mat.7 Professional guidance for Poodle-type coats puts the trim interval at roughly four to eight weeks with near-daily brushing between.8
The behavioral consequence is exposure frequency. There is no evidence that Poodles or Doodles carry a breed-specific grooming fear.5 What is breed-related is how often they are handled with tools by people who are not their owners. That makes early handling conditioning unusually valuable for this coat, and it makes the cost of a bad first groom unusually high.
1.2Early adversity and lasting fear R
Espinosa and colleagues analyzed 4,497 dogs and found that adverse experiences during the first six months of life were the strongest predictors of adult fearfulness and aggression. The effect varied by breed: some lineages showed resilience, others showed marked sensitivity to the same events.3 The study examined events such as pinning, having the mouth held shut, forced tethering, and dog attacks. A forced groom is not on that list, but the mechanism described, repeated inescapable stress during a plastic developmental window, is the same one a restrained, panicking puppy on a grooming table experiences.
Maier and Seligman's neuroscience review reframes learned helplessness: passivity in the face of uncontrollable stress is the brain's default, and it is the experience of control that must be learned.9 That finding is the scientific basis for giving the dog a way to pause the procedure. Control is not something we surrender to get the job done. It is what makes the job doable.
1.3Stillness is not calm R · V
Hart and Hart measured heart-rate variability and behavior across routine grooming phases and found progressive autonomic stress, lowest HRV during drying, and a correlation between behavioral suppression and autonomic stress during restraint, nail trimming, and drying.4 AAHA lists freezing, lowered posture, hypervigilance, trembling, and escape attempts among signs of distress, and AVSAB warns that a passive, frozen patient may still be experiencing fear.1

The most common relapse is a handler who runs dozens of rewarded micro-sessions, then performs a real groom with no food, no pauses, and no choice. The dog encounters a different procedure and learns that the sessions were a trick.
1.5Developmental timeline
AVSAB identifies the first three months as the most important socialization period and recommends manipulation of all body parts beginning early.10 AAHA describes roughly 10 to 20 weeks as intense environmental learning and warns that forced exposure of fearful puppies can increase fear.1 Session durations below are practitioner estimates.

1.6Cooperation is a better functional goal than tolerance T · P
Cooperative care originated in zoological medicine, where large animals cannot be forced, and has been adapted for dogs through frameworks such as Jones's ten essentials and Patel's Bucket Game.12 The goal is a dog who participates: offers the paw, holds the chin, returns after release. Tolerance describes a dog who has stopped objecting. The two look similar for one session and diverge over a lifetime.
Building the Skill From the Ground Up
Tools become good news first. Then a start button. Then one unit at a time.
This part is the working core of the system. It states the four rules every session follows, teaches the two start buttons, conditions the table before any tool touches it, sets the counterconditioning sequence, and then walks each of the ten tracks from first approximation to functional goal.
Two ideas repeat. Reinforce densely while the puppy is learning, and change only one thing at a time when she struggles.

2.1The four rules R · V · T
Begin at an intensity where the puppy notices the stimulus and stays loose. Clippers across the room, not on the paw. If she cannot eat, leans away, or goes tight, you started too high. Come down. Flooding is a terms breach.1
Tool appears, food starts. Tool leaves, food stops. Stillness is not required. You are changing the emotional prediction before asking for behavior.1
A chin rest or station is the start button. Chin up means hands off, no comment, wait for the re-offer. Do not finish the stroke first.9
Distance, sound, duration, pressure, body region, handler, or location. Never two in the same repetition.1
2.2Start buttons T · P
The chin rest
- Hold a flat palm about an inch below the puppy's chin. Mark the instant the chin touches. Feed from the other hand.
- Once reliable, delay the mark half a second so the puppy applies sustained downward pressure.
- Build duration: one second, two, five, ten.
- Transfer the target to a folded towel on a lap, chair, or table.
- Introduce one touch, an ear or a shoulder, only while the chin is down. If the chin lifts, all handling stops. No scolding, no luring. Wait for the re-offer.
The Bucket Game
Patel's method uses a container of food as a visual consent cue.12 The puppy learns that a sustained gaze at the bucket, at a distance, is what produces food. The handler's other hand then approaches the body. Gaze held, hand continues and food follows. Gaze breaks to the hand, hand withdraws. Contact is added last, at the lightest pressure. A frozen puppy is reset with a tossed treat, never by continuing.
Either start button works. The chin rest is the Stokeshire default because it transfers cleanly to the salon table and to a family's kitchen.
2.3Conditioning the table before any tool T · P
For many dogs the table itself predicts stress. Before tools appear, the table must predict something good. Two exercises: the cheese bowl (puppy invited onto the mat or table, licks a smeared bowl, is invited off; three or four rounds, no handling) and the baby-food syringe (a steady stream while on the surface). AAHA also recommends non-slip footing because secure footing reduces the urge to bolt.1
2.4The counterconditioning sequence
Tool or handling begins → exceptional food begins → tool or handling ends → exceptional food ends.
Food serves three different functions and trainers should know which one they are using. Delivered because the puppy offered a chin rest, it is positive reinforcement. Delivered continuously while a dryer runs, it is classical counterconditioning. Used to occupy the puppy through a procedure she has not been prepared for, it is distraction, and distraction does not change what the dryer predicts. AAHA recognizes food and toys for counterconditioning, redirection, and reinforcement, and cautions about food allergies and food-related aggression.1
Reinforcers are chosen by the dog. Preference-assessment research supports identifying what actually functions as reinforcement for the individual rather than assuming.13 A sensible hierarchy: ordinary food for easy rehearsals; high-value food for new or difficult steps; play or release for dogs who prefer it; and the functional reinforcer of making handling stop.

Fading reinforcement while raising difficulty. A new room, a new person, or a running dryer is a new version of the behavior. Increase reinforcement again when the environment gets harder.1
2.6The seven dials P grounded in learning theory
Distance, sound, duration, pressure, body region, handler, location. Raise one while holding six. A dryer that moves from ten feet to two feet should not also get louder, aim at the head, run for five minutes, and happen on a table with a stranger. That is five dials, and a puppy who was fine with one will tell you the test was not fair.

Part 03 is the measurement layer. The anchor sentences are edition 1.0 and provisional. They are validated when two trainers score the same ten dogs and agree; any anchor read two ways is rewritten before the edition is signed.

Rungs are earned in any order the evidence shows. A dog with three qualifying rung-3 sessions and none at rung 2 is at rung 3; the easier rung is implied by the harder evidence.
3.4The Handling Read V · P
Derived from AAHA-listed distress signs.1 Record the peak read for each track worked. The decision column is not optional.
Treat refusal is not used alone: satiety, food preference, and illness all change eating. Its value is change relative to this dog's normal.14
3.5Earning and losing a rung P
A rung is earned when the dog has three trainer sessions at that rung, on at least two different days, each meeting all four criteria: Handling Read 0 or 1; recovery within ten seconds of release; food taken normally; and voluntary re-engagement within three seconds (returns to the mat or offers the chin). Rung 5 additionally requires one qualifying session with a second handler. The three-session count is a heuristic, not a biological threshold. The emotional response is the criterion.
Regression is expected. Two consecutive trainer sessions at the earned rung with a read of 2 or higher drop the earned rung by one until it is re-earned. Adolescence and coat change will trigger this. The family handout tells families in advance so it reads as normal.
Family sessions are logged with a three-word read and never move the earned rung. They render as their own trend line.
3.6Groom Readiness Index and readiness tiers P
The Groom Readiness Index is 100 times the sum of earned rungs across the ten tracks divided by fifty. Equal weight per track. It is null until at least one track has an earned rung of 1 or higher, and it is never shown as zero. It is a trainer and admin figure used to decide what to work next. It is computed from trainer sessions only, by the app, from evidence. No one enters it.

A four-week Doodle School dog typically leaves at Foundation or Salon Ready. Maintenance Ready is an Alumni target for most dogs. Stokeshire publishes the tier reached, the date, and the trainer. It does not publish a prediction.
Scoring bridge to the sixteen-area rubric
The Grooming and Handling Tolerance area is scored from the Ladder. Ten tracks at rung 2 or higher is a 6. Salon-ready tracks at rung 3 or higher is an 8. Any track at rung 0 caps the score at 4. Confirm against the current rubric edition before use.
3.7What the family sees
Families see rung names, never numbers. They see the read as three words: easy (reads 0 and 1), working on it (read 2), too much today (reads 3 and 4). They see the tier. They do not see the index, the flag, or the anchor codes. Trainer notes are shown in the trainer's own words, unedited, when published.
Do not use the words desensitized, bombproof, force-free, or tolerant in any family communication. Do not tell a family a puppy will love the groomer. Tell them which rung each track reached, on what day, and what comes next.
The Poodle and Doodle Coat, Equipment, and the Salon
Behavior and maintenance are separate obligations. Neither one can wait for the other.
Part 04 is the coat side of the problem. 4.1Coat variation T · P
Doodle is not a coat type. Within Goldendoodles alone, the parent club documents substantial texture variation and both shedding and matting.7 Well-bred Poodles carry a coarse, profuse coat that resists matting; many crosses inherit a dense soft undercoat mixed with longer guard hair, and shed undercoat becomes trapped instead of falling out. Roughly half of F1 crosses shed moderately or more, contrary to the popular claim.16 Stokeshire therefore records each dog's coat as observed at 8, 12, and 20 weeks: curl, density, undercoat, and how easily a metal comb reaches the skin. Genetics data informs the expectation; the comb decides.
4.2Coat change T · P
Between roughly 6 and 18 months the soft puppy coat gives way to the adult coat. Dead puppy hair stays tangled in new growth and mats rapidly against the skin. A dog who was easy to brush at five months can become a matting problem in three weeks at eight, and the result is often a painful shave-down that traumatizes an adolescent dog.16 This is the single most common way a good routine fails. The Alumni check-in at six months carries a coat-change prompt and a reminder to hold the brush and paw rungs through the window.
4.3Line brushing T
Surface brushing glides over the top layer and leaves mats forming at the skin. The only technique Stokeshire teaches:
- Part the coat with the fingers to expose a horizontal line of bare skin.
- With a slicker (coated, filed pin tips to prevent brush burn), brush a finger-width section from the skin to the tips.
- Drop the next layer down, one finger-width higher, and repeat, working upward.
- Run a fine metal Greyhound comb through the section from the skin out. If the comb catches, a micro-mat has formed. Work it from the outside in.
Always brush before bathing. Water shrinks and tightens curly hair around a mat and locks it to the skin. Do not let a wet coat air-dry unbrushed; it clumps in the armpits and groin. AKC grooming guidance specifically recommends checking to the skin behind the ears and under the legs.8
4.4Ears and plucking V · T
Routine plucking of canal hair was standard for Poodle-type coats. Veterinary dermatology has moved away from it. The canal self-cleans by epithelial migration and canal hair assists that process. Plucking tears follicles, leaves micro-wounds, triggers inflammation, and provides an entry point for bacteria and yeast, so the procedure meant to prevent otitis is often its cause.17 Plucking is a veterinary decision for infected, hair-packed canals where medication cannot reach, done under pain management. For healthy ears: trim canal-opening hair with safety-tipped shears, use a pH-balanced cleanser when there is a reason to, and clean the healthy ear before a suspected infected one. A red, painful, or malodorous ear is a veterinary visit, not a training goal.14

4.6Choosing and briefing a groomer V · T · P
For this coat the groomer is part of the dog's life, and the first visit is where the account can be drained in an afternoon. Stokeshire recommends the first visit be an introduction, not a groom: enter, treat from staff, brief stand on the table, hear a dryer at distance, leave. AVSAB recommends the same happy-visit model for veterinary care.18 Timing is set by the veterinarian on vaccination status.
A suitable groomer will discuss the dog's triggers, use food when appropriate, give breaks, stop rather than finish, and explain their dryer and loop policy. AKC's professional grooming standards include humane handling, stress assessment, and supervised restraint; NDGAA's examination tests safe handling and behavior management.15 The family carries a readiness card from the app: tier reached, tracks at rung 4 or higher, tracks below 3, start button in use, and the food the dog works for.
Troubleshooting, Thresholds, and Myth Testing
Rule out pain before adjusting training. A dog who was fine on Monday is presenting information on Thursday, not defiance.
Most handling problems are not training failures. They are pain, matting, a dial that moved too far, a tired puppy, or a bad salon visit wearing a training costume. 5.1Pain first V
AAHA pain guidelines treat a changed reaction to touch as a core sign of pain, and aggression can accompany it.19 Skin lesions, hot spots, interdigital pain, a broken nail, a tight mat, otitis, and arthritis all convert familiar handling into an aversive event. Grooming through untreated pain conditions fear on top of disease. Stop home work and involve the veterinarian for new focal touch sensitivity, yelping, lameness, head shaking, red or malodorous ears, raw or moist skin, bleeding, embedded nails, mats over irritated skin, or abrupt unexplained aggression.

5.5Escalation V
A Handling Read of 4 on any track is a same-day message to Stokeshire and pauses that track until cleared. Two reads of 3 on the same track in a row are a same-day message. Any of the pain signs in 5.1 are a veterinary message before the next session. Situational medication such as trazodone or gabapentin is prescribed and dosed by the supervising veterinarian only; trainers do not discuss dosing with families, and no dosing appears in any owner-facing Stokeshire material.21 A board-certified veterinary behaviorist is appropriate for repeated snapping or biting, panic at ordinary touch, generalized handling fear, worsening despite careful subthreshold work, or inability to complete necessary husbandry without force.22

Objective. V · T · P Produce a dog who participates in grooming and handling: loose body, normal food, voluntary re-engagement after release, across ten tracks, with a second handler, at maintenance intensity. Reward-based methods are the default; flooding, forced restraint of a panicking dog, and any correction are excluded and end the placement.2
Equipment. Non-slip mat, folded towel, coated slicker, metal comb, grinder, clippers with guard, safety-tip shears, towel, low-power dryer, cup for water, verified reinforcers, lick surface or squeeze food, ear protection, supervised loop.
Prerequisites. Medically clear for handling; no active skin or ear disease; coat comb-checked and free of tight mats; start button established on the floor before the table.
Sequence.
Table and mat conditioned → start button → body → lift → paws and ears touch → tools shown → contact → one unit → sequences with breaks → second handler → second location → maintenance.
Advancement. Three qualifying sessions on two days at the current rung. One dial at a time.
Regression. Two consecutive reads of 2 or higher at the earned rung drop it by one. A read of 3 ends the procedure. A read of 4 is a safety stop and same-day escalation.

Recording observable behavior over time is consistent with AAHA's recommendation to track change rather than rely on impressions.1
6.5Logging
Until the Companion app's handling module is live, log each track worked in the Daily Training Log text as track, rung attempted, read, and whether she came back. Example: Paws 2, read 1, returned. Brush 2, read 0, returned. Dryer 1, read 2, did not return, dropped to sight only. When the module ships, the same fields plus recovery, food, handler, and location become a form that takes under two minutes and computes the earned rung and the index. Appendix B is the paper version.

7.2Research gaps
McDonald and colleagues describe grooming as an under-researched welfare topic and call for work on prevention and best practice.5 There are no controlled trials of a complete puppy grooming-conditioning curriculum. Dose-response for session length, frequency, and repetition is unknown. Physiological measurement during grooming has begun but is not yet linked to long-term outcome.4 Automated behavior recognition from video is promising for annotation acceleration but uneven per class and unvalidated for grooming.23 Stokeshire's longitudinal dataset, same dogs across ages with known protocol, rubric edition, handlers, and outcomes, is positioned to answer questions the public literature cannot. That is the research program, and the instrument in Part 03 is its first measurement layer.

7.4The ten most important principles of handling readiness

Handled With Care
Your puppy's coat will be brushed nearly every day of her life, bathed, dried, clipped, and have her nails done for twelve years or more. Every one of those sessions is either a deposit or a withdrawal. Here is how to keep the account full.
Veterinary behavior organizations recommend reward-based handling and advise against forcing a dog through a frightening procedure.1 Everything below follows from that.
Four rules, on an index card. Start below the line: begin where she notices the thing and stays loose. The tool predicts good things: brush appears, cheese appears. She can stop it: chin on the towel means go, chin up means hands off. One dial at a time: closer, or louder, or longer, never two at once.
Seconds, not minutes. Touch a paw, pay. One brush stroke, pay. Ten seconds on the mat with her chin on the towel, pay. Several times a day, ending while she still wants more.
Brush to the skin. Part the coat so you can see skin, brush a small section from the skin out, then run a metal comb through it. If the comb catches, a mat is starting. Behind the ears, under the legs, and under the collar first. Always brush before a bath; water tightens mats.
A still puppy is not a calm puppy. Loose body, soft face, takes food normally, and comes back to the towel after you let go. That is the picture. A puppy who goes rigid and stares has not agreed to anything. Score it too much today, and start lower next time.
The groomer. Make the first visit an introduction, not a groom: walk in, get a treat, stand on the table, hear a dryer, leave. Bring the readiness card from your app. Ask whether they give breaks, whether they will stop rather than finish, and what their policy is on the dryer and the loop. If a groomer insists on plucking ear hair, you are allowed to decline; veterinary dermatology no longer recommends it for healthy ears.17
Coat change. Somewhere between six and eighteen months the puppy coat gives way and the dead hair stays tangled in the new growth. A dog who was easy to brush at five months can mat in three weeks at eight. Your app will remind you. Shorter, more frequent sessions, and a shorter cut during those months if it helps.
When something changes. A dog who was fine with her paws and suddenly is not is telling you something hurts. Check for a broken nail, a mat, a sore ear. Ask your veterinarian before you adjust the training. If a mat is tight against the skin, a short clip now is kinder than weeks of pulling.
A dog who walks over when the brush comes out to see what it will be worth, puts her chin on the towel on her own, lifts it when she needs a break and puts it back, takes food the whole way through, and comes back after you let go.
