Should You Clone Your Dog?
Cloning a dog is real, legal in the United States, and priced around fifty thousand dollars. Here is what that money actually buys, what it cannot buy, and the question most families are really asking when they start looking into it.
Every few months, a family reaches out to us after losing a dog they will never fully replace. Sometimes they have already looked into cloning. Sometimes they are asking us whether it works, whether it is ethical, and whether we would do it.
We are a breeding program, not a cloning laboratory, so we have an obvious interest in this conversation. We will state our position plainly at the end. Before that, here is the honest picture, including the parts that make our own industry uncomfortable.
The short version: cloning can reproduce most of a dog's nuclear genetics. It cannot reproduce a dog. The gap between those two sentences is where nearly every disappointed cloning customer ends up.
What cloning a dog actually involves
The technique is somatic cell nuclear transfer, usually shortened to SCNT. It has been used in dogs since 2005.
The process starts with living cells, most often cultured from a small skin biopsy taken by a veterinarian. Owning your dog's DNA is not enough. Hair, ashes, and old blood samples generally will not work, because the laboratory needs viable cells with intact nuclei that can be grown in culture. Those cells are then cryopreserved, sometimes for years, until an owner decides to proceed.
When cloning begins, technicians remove the nuclear material from a donor egg, insert the preserved cell or its nucleus, fuse and activate the reconstructed egg, and transfer the resulting embryo into a surrogate female. Canine reproductive biology makes this unusually difficult, because dog eggs are hard to mature reliably outside the body. Published protocols have generally relied on closely monitoring female dogs and recovering naturally matured eggs at the right point after ovulation.
If a pregnancy takes, gestation runs roughly sixty to sixty-five days, followed by about eight weeks of nursing before the puppy can leave the program.
One nuance worth noting: when Tom Brady disclosed in November 2025 that his dog Junie was cloned from his late dog Lua, the announcement described a non-invasive blood draw rather than a skin biopsy. Collection methods appear to be evolving. The underlying nuclear transfer step has not changed.
What it costs
Published United States pricing has settled into a fairly consistent band. ViaGen, the primary domestic provider, lists dog cloning at $50,000, with genetic preservation at $1,600 and annual cell storage at $150. Sinogene in China lists $50,000. Spain's Ovoclone has been reported around €55,000. Sooam in South Korea, historically the best-known laboratory in the field, was widely reported around $100,000 in earlier years and now quotes on request.
These are sticker prices, not total cost. Depending on your situation, add the veterinary biopsy, courier handling for biological material, health certification, transport, and any state or international requirements that apply to moving a live dog. For a domestic United States family the logistics are usually manageable. For anyone outside the country, the border requirements can add months and meaningful expense.

The number almost nobody publishes
When a cloning company advertises a success rate, ask what the denominator is.
Peer-reviewed canine cloning research measures success as live puppies per transferred embryo. By that measure, the published figures are low.

The original Snuppy project transferred 1,095 cloned embryos into 123 recipient dogs to produce its result. The 2017 recloning of Snuppy was substantially more efficient and still required 94 transferred embryos across seven recipients to produce four puppies, one of which died four days after birth.
Commercial figures are not measured this way. One provider states its cloning success rate is theoretically above 99% once viable cells have been established, which describes an eventual service outcome after potentially repeated attempts rather than embryo-level efficiency. We found no independent audit of that figure. ViaGen takes a different approach and publishes no embryo-level rate at all, offering instead a full refund if it cannot deliver a healthy pet. That is a contractual allocation of financial risk. It is not a statement about how many animals were involved.
Same genes, different dog
This is where the popular idea of cloning diverges most sharply from the science.
A clone is best understood as a genetic twin born later. Its nuclear genome can be extremely similar to the donor's, but even the genetics are not a perfect copy. Mitochondrial DNA comes principally from the egg donor. Development introduces epigenetic differences and occasional mutations. And the puppy inherits none of the donor's memories, learned routines, attachment history, or relationship with you.
Barbra Streisand, who cloned her dog Samantha and has spoken openly and positively about the experience, still observed that the resulting dogs had different personalities. That is probably the most useful single data point available to a prospective customer, because it comes from someone who does not regret the decision.
There is real evidence that genetics contribute to behavior. Research on cloned detection dogs derived from an elite working animal found enough behavioral consistency to justify studying cloning as a route to high-performing working dogs. That demonstrates genetic influence on temperament tendencies. It does not establish that any individual clone will develop the same personality as its donor, and the same research tradition emphasizes that training and environment remain essential.
The British Small Animal Veterinary Association, in its position reviewed in February 2026, states plainly that cloned pets are unlikely to be identical to the originals, particularly behaviorally.
Cloning does not filter out inherited disease
This point gets very little attention in cloning marketing, and it matters more than almost anything else on this page.
A clone receives essentially the same nuclear genetic variants that produced the traits you loved and the variants that carried the donor's disease risk. Cloning is not a genetic health reset. It is deliberate replication of a genotype, including the parts of that genotype you would never have chosen.
That does not mean a clone is destined to develop everything its donor developed. Most disease outcomes depend on environment, age, chance, and complex interactions between many genes. But the direction of the technology runs against the direction of responsible breeding practice, which works to reduce the frequency of harmful inherited variants rather than reproduce them intact.
The one genuine medical advantage
If you clone a dog, you know its genetic background in extraordinary detail, because you lived with it. Share the donor's full medical history with your veterinarian, pursue appropriate genetic screening, and plan breed-appropriate surveillance early. That family history is predictive rather than deterministic, but it is more than most owners ever get.
One related note on insurance. We found no mainstream pet insurer that underwrites cloned dogs as a separate category. Standard questions still govern: age at enrollment, symptoms already present, and how the policy defines a pre-existing condition. What ordinary policy language does not clearly settle is whether an insurer would treat known donor genetic disease as relevant when the clone itself has never shown a sign. Get that answer in writing before you enroll.
Is it legal in the United States?
Yes. We identified no federal prohibition on commercial pet cloning, and ViaGen operates openly as a domestic provider. This is general information rather than legal advice, and state and local animal welfare rules still apply.
Internationally the picture varies considerably. Commercial pet cloning is effectively unavailable in the United Kingdom under its regulatory approach to animals used in scientific procedures, though British owners can bank tissue domestically and have cloning performed overseas. Commercial providers operate in China, South Korea, and Spain. Australia's biosecurity regime makes import feasibility a larger practical obstacle than cloning legality itself.
The practical point for any cross-border family is that there are two separate journeys. Shipping preserved cells out is governed by biological material rules. Bringing the finished puppy home is governed by ordinary dog import rules, which means microchip, rabies documentation, health certification, commercial movement classification, and in some countries quarantine. A cloned dog receives no special border category. It is simply a dog.
The ethical objection is not about the puppy
The strongest argument against commercial pet cloning is not that the delivered puppy suffers. Most surviving clones appear to live normal lives. Snuppy lived about ten years and his cell donor about twelve, both within the expected range for Afghan Hounds. A large observational dataset covering more than a thousand cloned dogs did not identify an obvious longevity problem among healthy-born clones.
The objection is about the production system standing behind that one puppy. Egg donors. Reproductive monitoring and retrieval procedures. Surrogate females. Embryo transfers that fail. Pregnancies that do not reach term. Neonatal losses. A meaningful number of reproductive animals are involved in producing one delivered clone, and the customer never meets any of them.
That burden is easier to justify for research with a major health or conservation benefit. It is harder to justify for an elective companion animal. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association does not support commercial cloning of companion animals, citing welfare implications for both clones and surrogate mothers and insufficient long-term evidence.
Providers make a different case. ViaGen states that it assumes lifelong responsibility for the welfare of its egg donors and surrogates. That is a relevant commitment, and it is a provider claim rather than an independent welfare audit.
Public opinion has not moved as far as the celebrity coverage suggests. Gallup's 2025 values survey found that 34% of Americans considered cloning animals morally acceptable. Pet-specific polling is thin, but broad acceptance of animal cloning remains a minority position.
What families are actually asking
In our experience, almost nobody wants cloning for genetic reasons. They want a specific dog back. Cloning is simply the only product on the market that appears to offer it.
Underneath that, the real question is usually narrower and much more answerable:
- Can I get a dog with that same steadiness around my kids?
- Can I get that coat again, and that size?
- Can I avoid the health problems that took her from us?
- Can I know something real about this puppy before I commit?
Those questions have answers. None of them require a laboratory.
Where predictability actually comes from
Predictability in a well-run program is not one intervention. It is a stack of them, and none of them guarantee an outcome. Each one narrows the range.
Comprehensive genetic screening on both parents
Every breeding dog in our program completes a full genetic panel covering more than two hundred conditions, plus coat and trait loci, before entering the program. Orthopedic and eye evaluations are applied where appropriate to the lineage. We do not pair two carriers of the same recessive condition, and we do not pair known risk factors. This reduces heritable risk. It does not eliminate it, and no honest breeder will tell you otherwise.
Low coefficient of inbreeding
Genetic diversity across a pairing tends to reduce the probability of a puppy inheriting identical harmful recessives from both sides. This is one of the clearest structural differences between reproducing a single genotype and breeding for a healthy population.
Repeat pairings and full siblings
If you loved a dog from a particular pairing, the most direct route to a similar dog is often the same pairing repeated, or a full sibling from a later litter. Littermates and repeat-breeding siblings share substantial genetics and, unlike a clone, come out of a program designed to improve on the previous generation rather than replicate it exactly.
Temperament evaluation before placement
Genetics set a range. Development determines where inside that range a puppy lands. Matching, not selecting
Families generally do better when they describe the life the dog will live and let evaluation drive the match, rather than choosing from photographs. This is the part of the process that most resembles what people hope cloning will do, and it costs a fraction of fifty thousand dollars.
Where we stand
We do not clone dogs and we do not intend to.
Our reasoning is not squeamishness about the technology. It is that the reproductive cost falls on animals the customer never sees, in service of an outcome the technology cannot actually deliver. A cloned puppy reproduces a genotype, including its inherited disease risk, while the thing the family is grieving is a relationship built over years of shared life. We are not willing to trade the first for the illusion of the second.
We also think the honest version of this conversation serves families better than the marketing does. If you are researching cloning after a loss, you are not being foolish. You are trying to solve a real problem with the only tool that seems to promise a solution. It is worth knowing what the tool does before you spend the money.
If you decide to proceed with cloning, we would rather you do it with clear expectations than talk you out of it. Ask any provider how many surrogates and egg donors are typically involved per delivered puppy, what happens to those animals afterward, and what their live-birth rate per transferred embryo has been. The quality of the answers will tell you a great deal.

They generally improve the odds, and unlike cloning they do not require reproductive procedures across multiple donor and surrogate animals to produce one puppy.
Can you clone a dog after it has already died?
Sometimes, but it is considerably less reliable than banking tissue while the dog is alive. Cloning requires viable cells with intact nuclei that can be cultured, so DNA alone, hair, or ashes are generally not sufficient. Providers advise acting quickly, keeping the body refrigerated rather than frozen, and contacting the laboratory for collection instructions immediately. One European provider warns that cloning becomes considerably more difficult from roughly the fifth day after death. If preserving the option matters to you, tissue banking during your dog's life is the far more dependable route.
