Cutaneous

The most common form affecting the skin. Early on it looks like chronic allergies, dry and itchy and red. Over time the skin thickens and may ulcerate. It tends to move slowly but is generally harder to control long term.

Extranodal

Begins in organs outside the lymphatic system such as the eyes, kidneys, brain, or heart. Signs depend entirely on the organ involved, and the outlook tends to be guarded because these sites are difficult for treatment to reach.

Environmental Factors You Can Influence

Genetics set the foundation, but the environment can tip the balance, and several exposures are within a family's control.

  • Lawn chemicals. Professionally applied pesticides have been associated with a meaningful increase in lymphoma risk. Some self-applied lawn products have been linked to more than double the risk in certain studies.
  • Broadleaf herbicides. Common weed killers have been associated with significantly elevated risk, and the residue can persist on grass for at least two days and drift indoors.
  • Airborne pollutants. Long-running research has detected volatile organic compounds such as benzene and xylene in the urine of dogs, with affected dogs tending to show higher levels of DNA damage.
  • Secondhand smoke. Dogs in smoking households have consistently shown higher lymphoma rates.
Reassuring news

Commercial flea and tick preventatives, including oral tablets, topical drops, sprays, and collars, have been evaluated and found to have no association with lymphoma risk. You do not need to avoid these products out of cancer concern. A practical takeaway: reduce lawn chemical use where you can, and keep your dog off treated grass for at least forty-eight hours.

How It Is Diagnosed

If your veterinarian suspects lymphoma, the path usually moves through a few clear steps. A physical exam and bloodwork come first, often followed by a fine needle aspirate that pulls cells from an enlarged node for the microscope. The most decisive step is immunophenotyping, which determines whether the cancer is B-cell or T-cell. A biopsy provides the definitive classification, and staging through imaging shows how far the disease has spread. Staging runs from a single node through bone-marrow involvement, and dogs are further sorted by whether they currently feel well. That single detail tends to shape both the plan and the outlook.

Treatment and What to Realistically Expect

Because lymphoma is generally a whole-body disease, surgery alone rarely resolves it. Chemotherapy is the primary treatment, and the veterinary goal is remission and quality of life rather than cure at any cost.

CHOP, the standard of care

A rotating four-drug protocol given over roughly nineteen to twenty-five weeks. It produces complete remission in the large majority of B-cell patients, with median survival generally in the range of twelve to sixteen months. T-cell disease responds less well, often six to nine months. Side effects are real but usually mild and manageable, and fewer than one in twenty dogs require hospitalization.

COP, a gentler option

A version without the drug most tied to heart risk, useful for dogs with pre-existing cardiac disease. Response rates are somewhat lower, but it remains a meaningful path for dogs who cannot safely receive full CHOP.

LOPP for T-cell disease

For peripheral T-cell lymphoma, a different drug combination may outperform CHOP, with some studies reporting survival closer to eleven to seventeen months. Worth discussing directly with your oncologist if T-cell disease is confirmed.

Newer options

An FDA-approved injectable agent that works selectively inside lymphoid cells is often used after relapse. An oral treatment that received full FDA approval in early 2026 is now the first home-administered option approved specifically for canine lymphoma. Because it is a hazardous medication, gloves are required when handling it, and pregnant women and children should not handle the tablets or contact a treated dog's waste.

One critical warning about steroids

If a dog is given prednisone or other steroids before a definitive lymphoma diagnosis is reached, it can significantly reduce the effectiveness of later chemotherapy. Steroids can trigger a resistance mechanism that pumps treatment drugs out of cancer cells. If lymphoma is a possibility, talk with your veterinarian before starting any steroid.

There is one hopeful exception worth knowing. T-zone lymphoma is a slow-moving form of T-cell disease that behaves very differently from the aggressive forms.
